AOSS tour a hit!

For the first time ever, MASN had a greater-than-100% turnout for a group event! The tour of the Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences building last week was packed, with several brave members hitting the stairs to scale the building instead of the elevators. Did you know that the entire concept of satellite meteorology started right here at UW-Madison? Most of us did not! The guides were excellent and led us to three distinct parts of the building – the server room where massive amounts of satellite and weather data is processed, shared, and stored, the Antarctica Weather Station offices where we met fellow Academic Staff who visit the southernmost continent to install and maintain the huge network of weather stations that report back to space-based satellites and other devices, and then to the roof to see some of the satellites that receive and transmit all that data! Our group was dazzled and we definitely hope to visit again soon.

In other news, another tour has been scheduled of a long-time MASN favorite – the Carillon tower outside of the Sewell Social Sciences building. Long-time MASN member and skilled carillonneur Lyle Anderson will be again leading the tour. The email went out on Thursday March 5 to all current MASN members, so if you didn’t get it, please contact us – we want to make sure all members get invited to all events!
